Safety Initiatives During LaHood Tenure at DOT

Comments Off

Ray LaHood, Secretary of the Department of Transportation, recently announced that he would be stepping down from his position when his successor is confirmed by the United States Senate. LaHood, an advocate for safe driving throughout his career, takes almost five years of experience with him.

LaHood emphasized distracted driving as the hot button topic for his tenure at the DOT, pushing states to enact laws against texting and cell phone use while driving. LaHood was especially concerned with tractor-trailors and the effects of texting on truck operator’s reaction times. LaHood worked to prevent automobile makers from adding certain potentially distracting in-car functions. LaHood explained that "These guidelines recognize that today's drivers appreciate technology, while providing automakers with a way to balance the innovation consumers want with the safety we all need.”

He campaigned for increased safety as to motorcoach companies, pushing for increased investigation and regulation on high risk carriers. Motorcoach industry issues such as driver qualifications, operating schedules and operator safety, were all on LaHood’s radar as he instituted new programs and appointed new officials to oversee the motorcoach investigations.

LaHood will continue to serve as the Secretary of the DOT until his successor is appointed and confirmed.
